THE FUR CHARACTERISTICS OF THE Dwarf SPITZ:

We will also see the different molts of the Miniature Spitz as well as grooming. We will not talk here about grooming for dog shows.

The Miniature Spitz's abundant fur is made up of two layers: an inner, dense one, made up of short, woolly hairs, and an outer layer with a longer, rough coat. This structure is adapted to provide thermal insulation and protection against external elements. ( https://pomofthegang.com/pomeranian-et-canicule-comment-le-proteger-et-reagir/ pomeranian _ _

Remember one thing: the enormous furs that some pomeranian display majestically and which amaze us, are not the result of cosmetic products, but simply of genetics, transmitted by heredity, specific to each dog. If your little one doesn't have fantastic fur, don't spend the money on various products; that won't happen...no point in stuffing them with food supplements: these food supplements will optimize your animal's health and thus the fur will keep its most beautiful appearance, but it won't work miracles: genetics has the last word!

Caring for the spitz's fur is not that difficult. It consists of brushing, washing and maintaining the coat.

To maintain a good overall appearance, simply trim the hair lengthwise, round the ears (yes! round ears are a legend; cutting the hair is the secret), and trim the edges of the legs. to give this beautiful “cat’s paws” appearance.

Many owners release very lightly around the anus, we do not do this. It is also important to cut the nails (and the hair between the pads), because when they are long it has a negative impact on the support of the dog's legs.

If this simple grooming seems complicated to you, a regular visit to a groomer specializing in the breed will help you maintain good maintenance. WARNING ; make sure that this professional knows how to groom the spitz, many owners have had unpleasant surprises!!!

THE DIFFERENT MOTHS IN THE Dwarf SPITZ:

1/ Juvenile molt:

The most important shedding phenomenon occurs, in principle, during the Pomeranian's childhood, when the puppy is between 4 and 8 months old. This is the juvenile molt. She is usually spectacular!

However, it can be much more discreet: the most important thing is that it happens. If this is not done, you will have to remain very vigilant about the possible attack of a hormonal disease: Alopecia X, also called Black Skin Disease (BSD) Click HERE.

We will talk about Alopecia

Let's return to the juvenile molt; During this period the puppy may lose almost all of its fur but this is a normal and healthy , so there is no need to worry.

It is important to brush and wash your Spitz very regularly in order to remove dead hair and thus ventilate the skin.

Some breeders recommend weekly washing, we apply this method.

When drying, the action of a blower-dryer helps a lot to remove this dead hair.

This natural process involves replacing the puppy's coat with that of the adult. Some dogs, when changing their coat, see their color transform to its final shade. We will notice the beginning of this transformation all along the spine.

Around 8-9 months or more, the Pomeranian will have its adult coat but it will continue to change and grow until it is around 3 years old. Regular brushing will facilitate the shedding process and help maintain good hygiene.

2/ The seasonal moult of the dwarf spitz:

In spring and autumn you will also notice molts in the spitz. They will be more or less spectacular, depending on your little one's genetics. An example below:

3/ The birth molt (postpartum) in the Miniature Spitz:

This is a very spectacular molt in female Pomeranians. It occurs several weeks after giving birth. It is due to the hormonal changes that the female dog undergoes during this period.

We understand better why, when future adopters ask to see the mother of the babies, some breeders are reluctant. The best thing is to explain this phenomenon.

Brushing the Pomeranian:

Brushing your Pomeranian is above all a moment of bonding with him. It’s a moment that you give to him and which will help strengthen your relationship.

This is also an opportunity to check the condition of your skin and the possible presence of parasites. It is advisable to use a brush or comb and penetrate deep into the undercoat.

One or two weekly brushings are generally sufficient but during the shedding period, in spring and autumn, it is advisable to switch to daily brushing. Regular brushing helps prevent the appearance of knots in his fur and rids him of any dirt caught during walks.

Always brush with a spray.

Washing the Miniature Spitz:

We often read in blogs that it is not advisable to wash our little one too often on the pretext that their fur is “self-cleaning”. We do not agree with this. We have not yet met any Pomeranians at “Pyrolyse” (lol).

Outside of shedding periods, we wash all our spitz at least once a month.

During the moulting period, we, but also many large breeders, wash our “pom” every week. We saw why in the paragraph on shedding.

It is imperative to choose products suitable for your Pomeranian and not to forget to wash the inside of the ears.

For all cosmetic products concerning the hair of our Pomeranians, we alternate with 4 different brands depending on the particularities of each product and the quality of the hair of each of our little ones.

If you groom and brush your Pomeranian carefully while letting its coat grow naturally, its fur will look amazing.

Its grooming must begin from a very young age in order to accustom it to remaining docile. Do not hesitate to talk to him and reassure him during the process in order to transform this moment into a moment of complicity.
