The Spitz is the descendant of the bog dog, a pet of Neolithic men. Over the centuries, it has developed in Europe and more particularly in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France. It is the oldest breed in Central Europe.

The different categories of Spitz

Among the Spitz, we distinguish:

– the German Spitz, which is divided into five categories according to its size and color. It has long, thick and silky hair, with an undercoat. The Pomeranian (or Miniature Spitz) is white, black, brown, orange, sand orange (sable), cream, sand cream (sable), black and tan, wolf gray or even parti-colored. The Small Spitz and the Medium Spitz are white, orange, brown, black, gray, bi-colored or variegated. The Wolf Spitz is gray and the greater Spitz is black, brown or white;

– the Japanese Spitz, characterized by its white color, which has a very noble appearance and is harmoniously proportioned. It has a shorter coat than the German Spitz;

– the Finnish Spitz, which has a brown coat and a medium size, is very lively. It was used by the Lappish tribes for hunting grouse;

– the Norrbotten Spitz, more compact and stocky, which has a short brown, red or sandy coat, and dry and strong musculature. Originally from Sweden, it is a small, very efficient hunting dog.

The Pomeranian is the international or English designation of the breed of the small dog otherwise called Pomeranian, Pomeranian or Miniature Spitz. It takes its name from Pomerania, a coastal region located in the northwest of Poland and the northeast of Germany where it is said to have been seen for the first time in the 19th century, and it descends from the sled dogs of the Arctic. Formerly, these dogs weighed around 13 kg but, quickly, the smallest within the litters were favored. Nowadays, the adult dog measures between 18 and 24 centimeters and its weight alternates between 1.8kg and 3.5kg.

 It has characteristics in common with the four breeds mentioned above but it is distinguished by certain aspects which contribute to classifying it in this specific breed. In fact, its head is wider in its posterior part; its eyes, slightly almond-shaped, are dark in color; its small triangular and pointed ears are constantly erect, this is one of its main characteristics; his coat cannot be short, he must have long hair to be considered a true Pomeranian : he notably has a collar of hair which falls in a mane on his neck and shoulders. Finally, he carries his bushy tail in a plume on his back.

With its teddy bear appearance and small size, the Spitz is used as both a pet and a guard dog. He was used a lot in the past as a herd leader or barge guard. He was the favored breed of Empress Josephine, Queen Victoria, Martin Luther, Isaac Newton as well as Michelangelo and Mozart, which contributed to the prosperity of his breed.
